Google’s response to the war in Ukraine
The war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022, has left a clear imprint on the situation prevailing in the advertising market. Sanctions that have been imposed by various countries, companies and institutions have affected access to advertising services in Russia.
Response from Google
One of the companies that joined the introduction of restrictions on the Russian market was Google. Among the first actions taken in response to Russia’s aggression was the blocking, in late February 2022. ads purchased or broadcast by Russian state media.
Next steps
The scope of advertising restrictions was expanded in early March 2022. At that time, a decision was made to stop selling ads in Russia. This applied to ads aired on YouTube, the search engine and Google’s partner sites.
Increasing the scope of restrictions
March 23, 2022. Google, in accordance with its policy on the display of ads next to content inciting violence, has blocked the display of ads next to content that uses, supports or dismisses the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.
The current situation
As of today (March 24, 2022), the main restrictions imposed by Google on Russia in connection with the war in Ukraine are: – blocking the display of ads on YouTube, Google’s ad network and search engine in the Russian Federation, – stopping ads on Google services and networks broadcast worldwide by advertisers from Russia, – blocking the broadcast of ads with content that exploits, supports or denies the war currently taking place in Ukraine.
