Users primarily using phones could already notice the changes since last April – as of January 2020, allGoogle search resultshave already changed significantly. Domain favicons have appeared in the search results, the color of the search link and its font size have changed slightly. Importantly, the search link has changed its place and is now at the very top of the search, with the page title just below it. The labeling of Google ads has also changed. The distinctive green box has been replaced by black, bold text with the word “Advertisement.” This is to make it easier to determine if a search result is high simply because it has been paid for.
Why did Google change the appearance of search results?
All the changes made are intended to make it easier for the user to determine the source of a search. The user can now more quickly notice the domain of the result and determine whether the information coming from it is useful to him. It will now be easier and quicker to determine if a search result is high simply because it is a paid advertisement. It is worth noting that this is another action by the Internet giant aimed at fighting fake news.
